South Brisbane is an inner city suburb located 1 km from Brisbane (CBD). It lies on the southern bank of the Brisbane River and is directly linked to the CBD by the Kurilpa, Victoria and Goodwill bridges.

Along with West End and Highgate Hill, the area is known as Kurilpa (Water Rat) to the local indigenous people. For many years, Musgrave Park has been a place where the Murri people of south-east Queensland. A bora ring, a symbol of the initiation ceremony of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, is buried here.

Europeans first settled in the area in 1843, followed by the construction of wharves along the bank of the Brisbane River. The Russell Street Area was the site of the first commercial buildings and hotels. Residences numbered by more than 100 by the 1850s.

From a heavily industrialised area, South Brisbane has evolved into a fashionable, high-density, modern residential suburb, thanks to its nearness to the city and reliable public transport.

South Brisbane is home to several parks, the most notable of which Musgrave Park (formerly called South Brisbane Recreation Reserve). It houses the Croquet Association Facility, Jagera Community Arts Resource Centre, Musgrave Park Pool and South Brisbane Federal Band Store. It offers a cricket facility, pathways, a playground and tennis courts.

Other parks in the suburb are Kurilpa Point Park, Tribune Street Park, Queensland Maritime Museum Park, Jolly Place Park, Dock Street Park and Alexander Smith Place Park.

There are many places of interest in the area. South Bank Parklands is popular to both locals and tourists as it features various restaurants and cafes, as well as other attractions such as the Wheel of Brisbane, the Nepal Peace Pagoda, Queensland Conservatorium, and more.

The Queensland Cultural Centre comprises: The Queensland Performing Arts Centre, The Queensland Museum and Science Centre, The Queensland Art Gallery, The Queensland Gallery of Modern Art, and The State of Library of Queensland.

The top-ranked Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre consists of 24 meeting and event venues, including four exhibition halls and a 8,000-seat auditorium.
You will find the most popular restaurants and fashion boutiques in Brisbane on Grey Street and Little Stanley Street. Grey Street is also where two five-star hotels and the South Bank Cinemas are located.

For major shopping trips, you can go to The Markets Shopping Centre or the South Bank Lifestyle Markets, which is held every Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday. It offers a wide range of arts, craft, designer fashion, home wares, exotic products, and more.
